The motivation for developing the AET technology was created when Sandy Strayer of SVI committed himself to supply guns, to his German distributor, which met an accuracy specification of 1.25 inches at 50 yds before he had tested his guns to ascertain whether all guns produced could meet that specification. Sandy built an accuracy test facility which included a linear carriage to allowed the gun to recoil realistically and a bullet trap which allowed recovery of the fired bullets undamaged. He also made another fixture which allowed pistol barrels to be tested separately. While the majority his guns passed the new accuracy requirement, some produced groups that were .25 to .50 inches larger. Sandys gun part tolerances are far tighter than those of any other 1911 manufacturer. It was possible to prove analytically that his gun parts were therefore not likely to be the source of any accuracy problems. Subsequent accuracy testing of guns, and then separate accuracy testing of the barrels from those guns, verified that, at least in Sandys guns, gun accuracy is essentially determined by the inherent accuracy of the barrel.
