The Aviation Shop was established in 1990 and opened its first retail store in Florida on the West Rand in September of that year. In 1992 the store was moved to the Rand Ridge Mall in Randpark Ridge on the northwestern outskirts of Johannesburg. The growth in business resulted in the move to a bigger shop in the Mall in 1995 and eventually to its present 200 Square metre location in 2003. Although The Aviation Shop started off dealing exclusively in aviationrelated hobby and collectable products, it has branched out to embrace the rest of the transport sector, namely trains, ships, armour and to a lesser extend motoring. Today the bulk of the shop’s stock consists of books, and plastic and metal models of these transport disciplines. Since 2005 The Aviation Shop has entered the flight simulator and DVD sectors and also started to carry a bigger range of products that would appeal to pilots and wouldbe pilots.
